Divine detail

Updated: May 10, 2022

We've talked before about the importance of focusing first on the structural elements of each room when embarking on a design project. But in this post, it’s all about the finer detail. And when it comes to interior design, I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to sweat the small stuff.

"Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail."

Leonardo Da Vinci, Italian inventor, architect, artist, mathematician, scientist

Lack of attention to detail is so easy to spot in a newly designed room or home. When the furniture and accessories look utterly fabulous, but the light switches and skirting have not been given a second thought, your stunning design all of a sudden becomes, well, mediocre.

So here's our pick of the finer details that should not be forgotten on your next project.

Architectural Moulding

Skirting, architrave, cornice, panelling, ceiling roses and so on. Decorative architectural features that, when done properly, effortlessly contour the edges of structural elements of your home - like door frames, ceilings and windows - to accentuate and beautify them. Interior features like these add detail and depth to a home. They complete the interior styling in a room - and are a wonderful and necessary element not to be forgotten.

"There is no magic in magic, it's all in the details."

Walt Disney

Interior Hardware

Never underestimate the importance of interior hardware. Window and door furniture, light switches and sockets are so often overlooked, and yet they are fundamental interior features and have a big impact on the overall aesthetics of a room.

There's nothing worse than a beautifully designed, well thought out room arrangement that's littered with plastic switches and cheap door furniture. Set aside some of your budget at the start of the design process for interior hardware and you'll be rewarded in the long run.

Accessory Styling

Accessories add layers and depth to a room. They're also a great way to add a pop of colour or bring out the client's personality. Accessories are the icing on the cake and it's important to strike a balance between aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Scents

Scented diffusers and candles add a whole extra layer to a room and can really accentuate the mood and styling. If you have a light, bright room, opt for something fresh and floral with green or subtle fruit notes. A room with darker, richer tones can lend itself to a woody or aromatic scent. Whichever fragrance takes your fancy, don't be tempted to opt for cheap and cheerful. With room fragrances, you'll find that spending a little extra goes a long way, as the scent will be that much stronger.
